Now a days in the generation of web 2.0 the usage of online classified's is increasing, specially the category of free online classified is going on increasing.There are thousand's of free classified's on the web but different from the all is the Olx free classifieds.It's unique and different networks world wide.

In these we have just interviewed Mr. Amarjit Batra ( Sales & Marketing professional focused in the Internet space)

What is the main aspect of yours for building such as classified?

As the web evolved to a Web2.0 model, the internet world has seen a dramatic increase in User Generated Content (UGC) and free business models that are thriving because of people connecting and helping each other in their networks. We had seen this in the success of Craigslist that has become big with this model in the US market. But there were many things that could have been done better product wise. Also, Craigslist was big in the US but was not present or well known in many countries.

The other key trends in the Internet Industry that influenced us were:

  1. A transition from offline media consumption to online media consumption.

  2. A transition from offline advertising to online advertising.

  3. A transition from paid business models to free online ad supported business models.

  4. Emerging market growth with both GDP per capita and online media consumption growing faster in the developing world than the developed world.

  5. An ongoing and massive disruption in the $100 billion classifieds space away from newspapers first to paid vertical sites then to free horizontal classified sites. As that trend was largely underway in the US and Western Europe, but at its infancy in the developing world, we felt there was a unique opportunity to build a next generation free classified site for the world.

With these thoughts in mind, OLX was created in 2006: a free classifieds service with great and unmatched functionality and focused towards building the largest classifieds network in the world.

Specifically, OLX has

  • A city, neighborhood and zip code database so we can cover an entire country and not just pre-selected cities

  • A distance field allowing you to see postings within a certain range of your zip code in the countries where it is possible

  • Ability to include videos and pictures in listings

  • Ajax WYSIWYG editor for richer listings

  • Posting your listings on Social Network Sites

  • Ability to comment on listings to create a stronger community

  • Advanced search allowing searches at variable regional settings

  • Ability to post listings in any language in any country

  • Ability to view the site in any country in any language

  • Global reach – Today we are in 89 countries and 39 languages, including India (www.olx.in )

  • Mobile version of the site, that is highly relevant in big mobile markets like India.

Finally, the most satisfying aspect of OLX is when we get letters of appreciations and thank you notes from our users who benefit from using the site, whether it is getting a job, increasing the sales of their business, find the car they always wanted to bur or finding a dream house to rent or buy etc. It’s a pleasure to work in a space where we can make an impact on the lives of so many people, especially in a developing economy.


What are the future plans of you and olx for classifieds ?

OLX has been set up with the vision to become the largest classifieds service across the world. In 3½ years since OLX was formed, we have expanded our footprint across 89 countries and 39 languages. We also have a successful Mobile Site (like http://m.olx.in in India) in all these markets. We are doing quite well in Spain, India, Portugal, Mexico, South America, China, and the Philippines and have crossed 50 million unique visitors per month and 500 million page views per month worldwide.

Our future plans are to consolidate in markets where we are doing well and also make OLX popular in most of the markets where we are present. India is a key market for OLX and we are working towards making OLX the preferred Local classifieds site in the country. We are striving towards making OLX available everywhere through our presence on web, mobile and in local languages. India is a young market for a local online classifieds and it’s our endeavor to provide our users the most user friendly and convenient platform to help them buy, sell, trade or exchange any products or services.

I am personally responsible for building the growth for OLX in India and am also supporting our business development efforts across other countries.



Why should an ordinary person prefer OLX classified to any other company?

The first reason for preferring OLX is that we are 100% free. We are free to search, post an ad, contact the ad poster and for any transaction that originates from the site.

As an individual, there are limited options to advertise services like buying and selling a ‘used mobile’, ‘used motorcycle’, ‘used furniture’, paying guest accommodation, starting a part time business, etc .

What’s the better thing in your classified than any other company?

The first key difference is that we are 100% free to post and intend to remain free to post. Other similar sites and some of the other global leaders have started charging for jobs, real estate and other categories in certain cities.

We are also better than other classifieds players because of many product innovations that we have done on OLX:

  • We have a fantastic mobile version (such as http://m.olx.in ) reachable from any cell phone.

  • We allow users to promote their listings automatically on social networks.

  • We have a rich WYSIWYG editor allowing users to create colorful postings without knowing HTML.

  • We support photos and videos.

  • The site is multilingual even within countries with 39 languages supported.

  • We have powerful search functions in real estate and cars.



Do you guarantee of your classified system?

We do not guarantee business or leads to advertisers nor do we control the transactions on our site. Since we are a free site, we allow the users to contact the Ad posters directly and the transactions normally take place offline. The payment for the goods and the exchange of products happen offline. Since these are local transactions, these normally take place face-to- face, so the risk is lesser.
